Title: Before the Dawn
Author: holyfant
Pairings: John/Mary, John/Sherlock
Length: 1333 words
Rating: Gen
Warnings: none
Verse: BBC
Author's summary: “I don't understand why he doesn't –” John started, then stopped.

“Oh, come on,” Mary said, eyes sharp and bright despite the fatigue in her voice. “You know why.”

Reccer's comments: This made me want to curl my arms over my ribs to hold in the pain, and I mean that as a compliment. It's so perfectly aching--holyfant does so much with so few words here, and with what's implied but never stated. Sherlock's obvious misery and loneliness, and the way John wants to help but really has no idea how to fix it, have the sense of tragic inevitability that comes from characters trapped by their own actions. It's hard to watch but so well done, and it's easy to imagine this happening in canon.
