Fic Rec: O Still Small Voice of Calm

Title: O Still Small Voice of Calm
Author: Persiflager
Pairing: Sherlock Holmes/John Watson
Length: 5,829 words
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: None
Verse: BBC Sherlock
Author's summary: Written for this prompt on the kinkmeme that asked for a choir AU.

Reccer's comments: I find myself returning to this story every few months. I love how cleverly the author has used all the BBC Sherlock characters, and how in character they remain even though this is such an AU -- they're in university, much younger, and of course, in a choir. I thought Greg Lestrade in particular was a skillful re-imagining of the BBC's Lestrade.

Most of the story is told from John's POV, so we meet the others and come to understand what's going on, and their relationships with Sherlock, as John does. We occasionally see through Sherlock's eyes, and his delight with John is a delight to read. The sequence of events in this story follows that in A Study in Pink to a remarkable extent, and makes me giggle every time. For such a brief piece, it makes me as happy as the music makes John happy.

If you want to hear John's solo, the Nunc Dimittis, there are many examples available on Youtube, such as this one. The story's title comes, I believe, from the hymn Dear Lord and Father of mankind:
Breathe through the heats of our desire
Thy coolness and Thy balm;
Let sense be dumb, let flesh retire;
Speak through the earthquake, wind, and fire,
O still, small voice of calm.

This is short, sweet, and charming as hell.
