While John and Mary are out of town, Sherlock fulfills John's promise to Archie's mum to take Archie to the London Aquarium as a treat (payment for being usher at the wedding?). In the course of which, Archie gets some lessons in deduction and human nature, and solves his first case.
I've always been fascinated by the idea of Sherlock in a parental role; he's so frequently presented as childish on the show, with all these hovering figures surveilling and trying to direct him, it's interesting to see how he copes with being the quasi-authority figure outside the boundaries of a case. And this fic really satisfies in that regards.
This is simply a lovely fic, with bang-on characterisation of both principals. The author makes very fine use of the obvious connection between Sherlock and Archie that we saw in the show. As well, she places the story firmly within the timeline of the series by deftly included references to what's going on in Sherlock's life at the time, including his "relationship" with Janine and its references to the Magnussen case. All in all, a very sweet and enjoyable "missing scene" between the wedding and the drug-fuelled crash to come.
