John escapes to 221B, where Sherlock soon appears, Best Man speech in hand.

An AU take on John and Mary's wedding day, where John finally begins to understand who Sherlock Holmes really is.

This is just a small fic, but it packs a mighty emotional wallop. Atmospheric and subtle, the feels gradually sneak up on you until it's all you can do to get your breath back.

This is an imagining of what might have happened if John and Mary's wedding had been interrupted before the exchange of vows by someone who knows about Mary's past (this 'someone' being a character that we meet in HLV). John ends up spending what would have been his wedding night at 221b, of course, nursing his broken heart with scotch and solitude. But not for long.

Enter one Sherlock Holmes.

What follows next is understated but oh so effective. Sherlock pulls out his index cards, and proceeds to deliver his Best Man Speech to an audience of one. With just a few changes in wording, along with the dramatic change in setting, the entire tone and purpose of the speech shifts into a completely new direction. And, in the words of the author, "John finally begins to understand who Sherlock Holmes really is."

Hint: it's not a high-functioning sociopath.
