Author's summary: Inspector Hopkins is summoned to deal with a nasty murder in a much worse weather. And said case promptly turns out to be more complicated than originally seemed.

Reccer's comments: I loved this story from the first time I read it. It’s told in first person from the point of view of Inspector Stanley Hopkins, and the author has a lot of fun playing around with Hopkins’ canonical admiration for Holmes. This is a case fic but the greatest pleasure of the piece is in all the little details that the author slips in concerning Hopkins’ adoration for the great detective.

What also appeals to me is getting to have a look at Holmes and Watson’s friendship from the outside. I think Watson often puts emphasis on the gap between himself and Holmes, but what Hopkins sees is how close the two men are. One of my favourite moments is Hopkins witnessing Holmes and Watson arguing about Gilbert and Sullivan while a poor suspect waits and thinks they’re discussing him.

I admire the way the author handles the plot. There is an almost farcical humour to it at times, but the story never becomes ridiculous. It’s always based in reality and you care about the characters. And there’s a rather satisfying conclusion to the case.
