Title: Changing Of The Seasons (also on FF.net)
Author:
autumnatmidnite
Pairing: Sherlock/John
Length: 2,080 words
Rating: PG-13
Warnings: None
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: What was meant to be a leisurely stroll through Regent's Park turns into an angst-fest for the poor doctor. Or, John vs. the diabolical leaves.
Reccer's comments: Told from John's point of view, this is a very beautiful and moving late era fic with sweet little nods to the ACD canon. Roughly twenty years older than the John we encounter in Season 1, he's back where he was after his return to Afghanistan - feeling useless and dreading that Sherlock will think so, too.
The way the author has presented John's worries and Sherlock's eventual answer to them is absolutely masterful - both their voices are very in-character and the interactions between them are immensely close to everything that we've seen on screen.
There is a thoroughly autumnish feeling to the entire story - to the prose, to the setting, to John's thoughts, which means that it leaves a much more lasting impact than one would expect from so short a story. And when I glance out of the window I find that this really is the perfect read for the current season.
