Reccer's Comments: It's rare to find a vidder who can create both hilarious crack renditions of a show, as well as heart-rending paeans to the main characters. KatrinDepp is one of the most talented vidders I've seen. Her cuts are perfect, and her music selection is always spot-on. The relationship between music and image in her work is always interesting--each scene is delicately timed to elicit an emotional reaction, whether is is laughter (see "Sherlock song spoof") or tears ("My Head & My Heart"). She's also accomplished at mixing dialogue and music, using bits of dialogue and strategic music gaps to highlight humor or underline a dramatic line. The dialogue cuts is "Sherlock song spoof" are hysterical--especially the Moriarty scenes (seriously, you MUST see that scene). And of course, her vids are visually stunning: "My Head & My Heart" is particularly beautiful in this respect--KatrinDepp makes use of the stunning landscapes in THOB, cityscapes from the first series, and starkly poignant, almost still shots of John to build a world of emotion, thought and memory post-TRF.

KatrinDepp has a number of other Sherlock vids on her channel, these two are merely my favorites (and it was a painful choice!) out of an unbelievably amazing bunch. Go and browse!

(Mods--I hope I'm doing this right, I've never recced a vid before. If something's wrong, let me know what I can do to change it!)

Fic Rec: Dragon Heartstring in Ebony, Nine Inches, Quite Stubborn

Title: Dragon Heartstring in Ebony, Nine Inches, Quite Stubborn
Author: what_alchemy
Pairing: Gen., could be read as John Watson/Sherlock Holmes
Length: 2444 words
Rating: M
Verse: Sherlock BBC and Harry Potter cross-over
Author's summary: John doesn't know what he's found beneath Sherlock's floorboards, but he'll be damned if he's going to give it up.

Reccer's comments: Normally I'm not one for crossovers, but this sweet little piece effortlessly weaves the two worlds together. At the same time it's as much about John dealing with the after effects of the Reichenbach Fall, as it is about Sherlock's secret other life. I love the scene between John and Sherlock's mother, and for a fic that has a sad sort-of mood too it, it manages to be quite witty as well. John has a serious potty-mouth in this, and the "guest appearance" at the end (and well, the end in general) is great!

Excerpt: In Sherlock’s room, underneath the floorboards of his bed, John finds a long, slim parcel wrapped in a blue and black striped scarf. John unravels the scarf to reveal a beautiful box, cherrywood or something such. His hands hover over it — it feels important, like he should give this moment weight. Sherlock was hiding something in this box, possibly something Mycroft wanted. Before finding it, John overturned the sitting room, this bedroom, the kitchen cupboards, and found nothing Mycroft should have come snooping about after. Regular Sherlocky things. Antlers and canned haggis and vials of spinal fluid. But this. John’s heart stumbles.
