FIC: The Anatomist
Title: The Anatomist (also available on AO3 here)
Author:
rosa_acicularis
Pairing: Molly Hooper/Jim Moriarty, Molly Hooper/Sherlock Holmes, Sherlock Holmes/John Watson
Length: 24,253 words
Rating: Adult
Warnings: Graphic violence, language, disturbing themes (specifically mild, non-graphic incest if you choose to read it that way), character death (Jim Moriarty). Spoilers for all of S1.
Verse: Sherlock BBC, with hints of canon.
Author's summary: "You’re not the only one to enjoy a good murder. There’s others out there just like you – except you’re just a man. And they’re so much more than that." Jefferson Hope, A Study in Pink // When they are children, Moriarty is a game. A story they tell only to each other, in whispers. Jim and Molly Moriarty, from the beginning.
Reccer's comments: While a good many of you will probably already be familiar with The Anatomist, I hope it's new and exciting for the rest of you. Frankly, I'm flabbergasted that this has not shown up here yet but I have checked, and re-checked, and then checked again, and no one has recced this story. For a while, it appeared to be a WIP, but
rosa_acicularis now lists it as complete. Even when the last part was called 4/5, the shifting, non-linear structure made it so much less frustrating to read than your average WIP. Basically, it seemed like it could be complete at any part, and was always wonderfully satisfying despite being "unfinished".
This is, without a doubt, my favorite Mollyarty story. Molly is fascinating and, to me at any rate, entirely plausible in this.

That autumn, Jim starts bringing her dead birds.
“I could save one of the live ones for you, if you want,” he says, which is uncharacteristically generous of him. (Jim will never really learn how to share.) “They’re a lot more fun.”
Molly shakes her head and snaps on a pair of plastic gloves. “I learn more from them when they’re already dead,” she says. She holds out her hand. “Scalpel.”
Jim passes her a sharpened kitchen knife. “I’ve been thinking about trying for a cat.”
Molly pauses, her knife poised above the wren’s still chest. “That would be interesting. A cat’s anatomy would be a lot more like the real thing than a bird’s.”
Jim leans over her makeshift autopsy table, propping his chin up on his hands. He grins at her. “Also, cats can scream.”
Molly frowns. “Birds can’t scream?”
“I’ve never heard one, and not for lack of trying.”
“I wonder,” Molly says, and moves the tip of her knife to the wren’s throat.

On another note, "it's not my usual, but I gave it a shot and liked it a lot" is definitely the tone of comment I'm hoping for with my recs over the coming month.
