Fic Rec: The Allure of the English Countryside (BBC)

Title: The Allure of the English Countryside
Author: [livejournal.com profile] stardust_made
Pairing: Sherlock/John
Length: 2,200 words (more or less)
Rating: G
Warnings: If fluffy, ageing and nearing retirement-era BBC-based fic with sly ACD canon references isn't your thing, this won't be either.
Verse: Sherlock BBC, with clever nods to ACD canon
Author's summary: Written for [livejournal.com profile] nausicaa83 whose prompt was "how about something with Sherlock playing the violin for John? Something like this, maybe?" It was the first prompt I filled, partly because I was instantly inspired by the musical piece, partly because in all the stories I'd written not once had I had Sherlock playing the violin for John.
Reccer's comments: Sometimes you just want a well-written, non-angsty fic full of sentiment. The tea-and-buttered-toast equivalent of fanfic. THIS is one of those. An imaginative view of John and Sherlock in the future, and a lovely inspiration for what might coax Sherlock out of London. And be sure to listen to the Paganini piece, too.

Afrogeekgoddess's gorgeous, stunning After Love (http://archiveofourown.org/works/344181/chapters/558298) just finished last night. If you like vivid imagery, rhythmic prose, the sacred side of love, and the the difficult process of forgiving someone, check this out.

WIPs I am admiring:
Renegades (http://archiveofourown.org/works/434843/chapters/738423) by augsutbird. Post-Reichenbach AU. What if Sherlock took John with him to destroy Moriarty's network? Tension!! Making a turn for the dark, I suspect. *chews nails*

Other Experiments series (http://saki101.livejournal.com/20398.html) by Saki101. Sci-fi AU of Seasons 1 and 2, as well as of the Hiatus. Wonderful premise, lots of tension and evocative atmosphere. Clever, BAMF John! Sherlock, just what have you done??

Here's a WIP with a truly unique format: Texts From John and Sherlock (http://textsfromjohnandsherlock.tumblr.com/story_so_far).

The authors call it an interactive text-based fanfiction with occasional interludes of prose. It's half roleplay blog, half epic fanfic. The premise is that, after 'A Scandal in Belgravia', John set up a part of his blog where their fans can send in questions; he and Sherlock then answer them via text.

Do mind the warnings for non-con and torture scenes.

It's a tumblr-based creation, and people really do send in questions either as themselves, anonymously, or as characters from Sherlock. The creators respond (or, in Sherlock's case, ridicule and avoid answering) in-character. They banter back and forth, and when read in order they form a spectacular narrative, with multiple case-fics, a Sherlock who's sexuality is very twisty indeed, and a version of Irene Adler that I find both believable and incredibly admirable.
