Saturday open recs

Welcome to our first Saturday open recs post.

You're invited to post in comments any recs or requests for recs for fic, vids, art, or podfic. All versions of Sherlock Holmes are welcome. Please let us know if you have any questions in comments or PMs to the mods.

You're also invited to make a rec in an individual post.

ETA: Sorry, all -- LJ is seeing replies to this post as spam, and I've had to "unspam" them (when I see them) to make them visible. I added AO3 to our whitelist, but that seems not to be the problem.

A WIP I've been dying to rec: The Singular Case of Mr. Norbury (NC-17) by Random_Nexus. It's a Sherlock BBC crossover with '09 (or ACD if you prefer) that's equal parts awesome and hot with a dash of disturbing. One note: it's John/Watson...if that creeps you out, might wanna pass

John didn't know where the man came from. Didn't know why the man chose to dress in outfits that looked straight out of a Victorian tintype; far more genuine-looking than any costume John had ever seen. He had no idea why the man had seemed vaguely familiar upon their first meeting, but he was absolutely certain they had never met, all the same. John also didn't know why the man had such a fascination for one John Watson, a short, rather careworn, plain-looking, and generally broke ex-military doctor.

You can read it here on AO3. (http://archiveofourown.org/works/255611?hide_banner=true&view_full_work=true)

If you love AU's that take a cracky premise and make it believably in character, then I'd highly recommend the WIP Making the Connection (NC-17) by JessamyGriffth.

The story is set pre-canon, with John having just been sent home and in need of some cash. He becomes a phone sex worker, and gets a call from Sherlock, who's conducting an experiment.

What I love about this story is how John is able to quickly get inside Sherlock's head and turn his whole world inside out. It's also fun watching Sherlock deduce John over the phone.

If this sounds like something you'd enjoy, then don't let the WIP status deter you. You can easily read the first 31 chapters and feel satisfied.

Looking for shy!sherlock and/or body-conscious!sherlock fics. I've searched and searched, but I seem to be doing it wrong. :/ Any recs are greatly appreciated! Thanks! ♥

Some of my findings, new and old. I might post more a bit later today if I'll re-find the links of some recently published, interesting fics I've seen. Please see the author's notes/prompts for specific warnings, however "Teneo" should be the only one with possibly upsetting content:

Dragon!Sherlock and Hobbit!John meet.

Fem!John prevents and solves a crime.
Keeping the Doctor Away (http://mesmiranda.dreamwidth.org/14557.html) by Mesmiranda.

If you like a great gen fic with a canon feel, I highly recommend "Adagio Lamentoso" by Vrazdova. I thought the author's writing was just splendid, feeling right for both ACD's Watson and BBC's John, their voices merged. John and Sherlock are wonderfully in character and I really enjoyed the portrayal of their friendship.
There are some dark themes, so you might want to check the tags - and then I hope you enjoy!

Aderyn (http://archiveofourown.org/users/aderyn/pseuds/aderyn/works) has been writing two series of 221Bs, Compounds or Stars and Natural Facts, that are gorgeous prose poems. As a group, they cover both seasons. Most explore the bond between John and Sherlock, but many feature most of the other characters. If you love poetic prose and vivid imagery, I would dip into the series wherever you like, as the 221Bs are not arranged chronologically, or feature a narrative arc. A few of my favorites:
"Bright Morning Stars" (http://archiveofourown.org/works/339706), "Break, Burn Blow" (http://archiveofourown.org/works/373045), "B'ville Blues" (http://archiveofourown.org/works/381097), and "Weird" (http://archiveofourown.org/works/369130).
