It gets the reader to use their other senses -- namely smell and taste (if said reader has them, of course) -- in conjuction with imagination to put themselves into Joan's place as events unfold.

Also: ZOMG THIS IS HOT.

comments

Fic Rec: A Home for Us

Posted by: swissmarg

Title: A Home for Us
Author: sussexbound (SamanthaLenore)
Pairing: Sherlock Holmes/John Watson
Length: 30K
Rating: M
Warnings: Mentions of torture and suicidal thoughts, PTSD
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: He has been on the road for two years, and he is exhausted. He’s almost accepted that he will never see London (John) again—almost. But then there are nights like tonight, where he is weak, and all he can think of is the warmth of the flat they once shared, the crackle of the fire in the hearth, the teasing smile playing at the corner of John’s lips, the boxes of half-eaten Chinese takeaway balanced precariously in their laps. He aches at the memory of it, at the realisation that it is something he may never experience again.

Reccer's comments: Of all the cliffhangers the show has given us, I think the one at the end of series 2 is the most powerful for fans. There's something about the potential for anything to happen during the time Sherlock is away, both to him and to those left behind, and for an emotion-laden reunion when the Prodigal returns. This fic does a spectacular job of both, taking us into the minds, hearts, and bodies of both Sherlock and John as we see what a toll those two years took, and how they slowly manage to help each other to heal. (All episodes after Many Happy Returns are ignored.) This fic is truly a gem of its genre, filled with self-flagellating pining and aching regrets. The quiet rightness of them being together that neither can deny. The delicious, heady delicacy of the realizations and declarations and finally the swoon-inducing beauty of their eventual, inevitable consummation. Although there are some very angsty bits, the entire fic buoyed me up on a cloud of endorphins and just made me feel so serene and peaceful and comforted.

( Excerpt... )

comments

This is a complete AU in which Sherlock, John, and Greg are members of a Swiss mountain rescue team. Told in the format of a documentary with an extremely skillful film editor, the focus is nominally on the rescues and life on the mountain, but more tellingly digs into the private lives of the team members. The documentary format is pure genius with juxtaposed scenes, quick-paced montages and theatrical cuts that create fantastic tension and drama while preserving the mystery and building up an emotional reveal that literally had me grinning with tears of joy.

The rating is for language and possibly some depictions of injuries, no sex.

( Excerpt... )

comments

And it is. But it's also so much more than that. The installments range from pure PWP to hurt/comfort, fluff, and casefics. Throughout, John and Sherlock deepen and reinforce their emotional connection through an exploration of a variety of kinks. They also work through issues from both their individual pasts and the trauma they've been through together. With very smart, sophisticated writing and consistently high emotional payoffs, this series definitely delivered far more than I expected.

The author is still adding to the series, but each installment can be read as a standalone.

comments

Fic Rec: The Men Who Talked Between the Words

Sherlock never expected to have children, in part because he never expected to make it past 30. As it turns out, you don't get a choice. Crammed into Baker Street with a baby, John struggles with single-parenthood and his own fears, while Sherlock treads the fine line between doing too little and saying too much.

Reccer's comments: It's hard to think of what I can say about this fic that hasn't already been said. Four years in the making, of a length comparable to the Lord of the Rings trilogy, this story took extraordinary commitment to create and the end result is simply astonishing. I've been reading Holmesian fiction for quite a long time, and I've never run across another story that felt quite like this one. There's something so authentic and keenly observed about the details. There's a realism here that reaches out and never lets me go. The characters - both the main and the secondary ones - have such distinct voices, and their lives and relationships are deeply grounded and believable.

This is a realistic parentlock fic, and it's the deliciously slowest of slow-burn romances, and that heart of the story is beautiful. But that's really not all there is to it. Odamaki doesn't allow Sherlock, John, and the baby to live in a bubble. The story is full to bursting with the many other people who know them, who affect and are affected by them. Both Sherlock and John have important inward work to do before either is ready to think about romance. It's a story about growth, about healing, about hard-fought and hard-won maturity. About friendships and familiar places that won't stay neatly unchanged, and about painful habits and histories that won't fade away without long and deliberate effort.

When I think of this fic, the love story and the family Sherlock and John make together stands at the center. But I also think of Sherlock and Molly's quiet happiness working on her research together at Barts; James Sholto walking John through his fledgling orchard; Billy playing chess in hospital; Harry lounging with her girlfriend on the couch; Greg's tiepin; the moms in John's playgroup; the voice at the other end of a helpline.

This is a compelling fic about love and family, but it's also about all those other nooks and crannies of life that too often get left out of love stories. There's a village of vivid people wrapped up in this story, and I love them all.

(Also, I should add: 1) the story is complete. It ends at chapter 27. There are still new chapters going up, but they are 'bonus material' like deleted scenes and FAQ responses from the author. 2) The story goes AU after series 3, and incorporates no elements of series 4. The baby is a girl, but she is not the canonical 'Rosie' of the TV show).

comments

I'm not sure I can precisely articulate it, but it has something to do with its deliberate combination of intimacy and distance. The vignette takes place in the first blush of Holmes and Watson's new relationship - they are in bed together, joyous and lazily post-coital, learning the idiosyncratic details of each other's bodies. In the midst of this warmth, Watson observes a small scar on Holmes's neck, and Holmes tells him the truth about it.

Holmes suffered abuse as a child, about which he maintains ambiguous memories and feelings. And the story quietly and beautifully observes the complex reactions both Holmes and Watson have to sharing this knowledge. Something rings true to me about the double consciousness they both seem to feel. Holmes is at once vulnerable and guarded, drawing nearer to Watson but needing also to step back. Watson, for his part, is conscious of the thrill of a biographer presented with new insight into his subject, even as the lover in him reacts with profound emotion.

The author captures a deeply loving moment in the evolution of their relationship, which is not at all a simple moment.

comments

OneAllysa (on YouTube)
Pairing or Character: John Watson
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Link: Soldier vid post on tumblr

And here is the YouTube link, if you have trouble viewing the vid on tumblr: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NjQsp8TAy9w

Reccer's Comments: *deep breath* So, this is a BBC John Watson character study through all four seasons but with emphasis, I would say, on the later seasons. It offers a careful, insightful, and emotional exploration of the John Watson that angered many fans both of the BBC show and of the original Doyle stories, myself included: the angry and sometimes violent man who is, in important ways, 'not okay' and who knows that about himself. The vid touches on a host of issues - trauma, PTSD, alcohol dependency, trust and anger issues, violence, loss, addiction to danger. The vid highlights many of John's worst moments - both as a person suffering and as a man lashing out - but it also remembers his strength, his desire to heal and protect, and the hellish experiences he has been through that have shaped his emotional landscape. This tribute refuses to minimize his flaws, but nonetheless approaches his character arc with respect and empathy.

As in many well-edited vids, I was struck by a number of the vidder's visual storytelling choices. With a keen eye for parallels and a confident touch in the layering of song lyrics, dialogue, and imagery, it's a powerful work. Sometimes I find that fanvids, by condensing a narrative and developing tone, mood, and emotion with greater immediacy than a fully mounted episode, can succeed in making certain characterization or story choices work better than they do in the source material. For me, this vid does that for John.

EDITING TO ADD WARNING: The editing style includes cuts that flash briefly through a white screen. There's no strobe effect, but if you are sensitive to white flashes then you may want to avoid this one, or try it out carefully.

comments

It presents us with an unusually rumpled Mycroft, perhaps at the end of a late night in his first year at university? I love the wrinkles of his cardigan, the tails of his untucked shirt, the delightfully narrow and angular tilt of his shoulders, his lowered eyes, and a haircut reminiscent of James Dean. Quietly attractive, self-contained, and full of character -- this is a beautiful portrait of the young man Mycroft might have been.

comments

Cheerfully and affectionately tongue-in-cheek, full of visual double entendres and energetic vehicular flirtations, this vid will charm your socks off. Funny, fast paced, seamlessly edited, adventurous and domestic, and genuinely warm-hearted on top of it all, this vid celebrates a colorful and charming version of Holmes and Watson's immortal partnership.

I was previously unfamiliar with the "Sherlock Hound" adaptation, but wikipedia informs me that it was a Japanese-Italian animated series that ran for one 26 episode season from 1984 to 1985. Several episodes were directed by Studio Ghibli co-founder Hayao Miyazaki, and the steampunk sensibilities of this verse appear to great advantage in the vid!

comments

Sometimes, he finds, that’s not such a simple task.

Reccer's comments: This is an exceptionally beautiful and tender love story. At times it has an almost dreamlike tone, perhaps aided by its non-linear structure as Watson drifts in and out of different precious and private memories. At moments it is imaginatively and delicately sensual, at other times it's bickering and delightfully funny - the rhyming dictionary! - and at still other times it can be shyly romantic or quietly sad. It offers up a gentle kaleidoscope of emotion and character insight as we trace the shift from friendship to romance, and the way that shift must bridge the painful gap of Reichenbach.

The dialogue is often elegantly simple and understated. The settings are vivid, etched in period detail but never cluttered. The portrait of love at the story's heart feels genuine - at times courtly, at times frustrated, at times peaceful - and on a meta level the fic deliberately plays with words. It's a gently and pleasantly ironic twist that, even as Watson comes to see the value in leaving the most private parts of their shared life unwritten, the fic itself writes these very moments with grace and power.

It's a lovely story that I hope will move you as it did me.

comments

John wants to say: Augmentation circuits report temperature, pressure, various forms of quantitative input. Sudden changes are reported as pain, since sudden changes are dangerous, and pain is the quickest way to encourage reflexive extraction. But all John can manage is, “Nng.” Because this sudden touch is not reporting as pain.

Reccer's comments: This wonderful fic was five years in the making, and I'm so excited to be able to share it here on this comm now that it is finally finished! Patternofdefiance is a terrific writer, and this story is full of rich characterization, internal struggle, complex emotional and interpersonal dynamics, utterly convincing world-building, and well-realized original characters. This is a science-fiction, dystopic AU, but it's set in the very near future and the social, political, and psychological elements are convincing because they're only a few degrees removed from those of the world today. In this slightly more technologically advanced future, it's become possible to repair previously incurable injuries by grafting sensitive but short-term technology into the bodies and brains of the wounded. These disabled persons, who appear close to cyborgs, then have to deal with the ableism of a society that regards them uneasily and a medical profession that considers them violently unstable. Most of the care they receive is limited to 'maintenance and repair,' with the goal of preparing them for death once their augmentations fail - usually within two years - and ensuring they take no one else with them in their slow descent.

John enters the story as one of these disabled veterans, struggling in the aftermath of invasive procedures that were undertaken without his consent and which have transformed his body and his life in ways he finds hard to accept. It is in this state that he meets Sherlock and becomes his flatmate, friend, and colleague. Gradually they are both drawn into a series of mysteries surrounding other 'augmented' people, and they begin to realize that the information about John's condition peddled by the medical and political establishments may not be trustworthy.

This story has it all: insightful social commentary, an intelligent cast of characters -- John's ex, Mona, is one of the best OFCs I've encountered in the fandom -- and a slow-burn romance between Sherlock and John that, though fraught with miscommunication, manages to be both passionate and analytical, and above all superlatively in character.

comments

SFW but steamy
Verse: Granada

Author's summary: I’ve been re-watching “The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes” (aka the Granada Series) and I just have to draw these beautiful boys. <3

Reccer's comments: A kiss is just a kiss? This one is not. This one is absolutely searing. Just a wild kiss up against a wall, with beautiful position and coloring. There is a beautiful sense of desire unleashed and restraint breaking.

untitled lovely kiss by amy sherrier

And that's the last of my recs for June! Thanks to everyone for your patience. This spring has been a very trying time for me, but I did manage to rally at the end. I hope you enjoy all these artists' beautiful works, and make sure to let them know too.

comments

It’s super hot and intense, and given so much warmth and depth by the detailed surroundings.

Rosie is Playing With Mrs Hudson Now (and Sherlock and John playing with each other)

comments

She’s posed with grace and beauty and yet distorted, full of infinite sorrow, removed from the world and lost in herself. I get the sense when she touches her bow to the strings, something magical and terrible will happen.

The East Wind by Aneko

comments

I love Molly, I love her corny gallows humor, and this portrait really does her justice. Please do be sure to look at this as large as you can get it, the attention to detail is incredible. The artist also has portraits of Irene Adler and Jim Moriarty in this style.

The Pathologist

comments
