Fic Rec: Simple Mathematics (series)
Series Title: Simple Mathematics
Author: thesardine
Pairing: None
Length: 5,306 words
Rating: PG
Warnings: None
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: For Tesselation - John is introduced to the unexpectedly numerous Holmes siblings.
For Coefficient - John and Sherlock circuitously examine the options and the nature of their relationship.
Reccer's comments: Oh, hell, I'll indulge myself with old favorites tonight. Bedtime snacks.
I think this was intended to be a longer series, but after three years I don't expect it will be continued. That's a shame - of thesardine's deeply engaging variations on John and Sherlock, the version in this pair of stories is closest to my own reading of the canon characters through S2, portrayed with verve and charm. Surely all of thesardine's work will eventually be recced here, but it's been a while and I hate to let it languish. I claim these less-widely-read but sparkling little gems.
"Tesselation" is a tightly written character study staged around a birthday party for the Holmes matriarch. The Holmes siblings as seen through the eyes of an increasingly-bemused Watson. Not only unexpectedly numerous but perfectly hilarious and aptly named, each sheds their own light on the youngest brother.
Excerpt (vague - don't want to spoil short story):
"Coefficient" can be summarized thus: John tries to get laid, Sherlock tries to interfere, and they come to an understanding. Baignard only helps a little.

Excerpt (vague - don't want to spoil short story):
An exquisitely beautiful woman was seated in Sherlock's chair. John leaned to peer around Sherlock and he hit his head on the door jamb. She looked like Lauren Bacall. She had fixed herself a cocktail in what appeared to be one of Sherlock's chemical beakers.
"Oh Sherlock," she said, rising gracefully. She held her arms out to him.
"Get out," Sherlock told her.
"Coefficient" can be summarized thus: John tries to get laid, Sherlock tries to interfere, and they come to an understanding. Baignard only helps a little.

It came in a long cardboard cylinder with a note attached, which read:
Enjoy your date, Dr. Watson.
Kindest regards,
Baignard Holmes.
Four blue thumbtacks were contained in a small plastic bag, and John unrolled the poster. It was just a bunch of numbers, and John tacked it over the table for a better look. It didn't bother him that Baignard knew he had a date tonight - he often did anyway, and Baignard was cohorts with Mycroft, whom John knew to be an incorrigible meddler. John lowered himself stiffly from the chair he'd stood on, and stepped back to examine his curious gift. He crossed his arms. He tilted his head to one side. It was just a bunch of numbers.
