Title: Whispers in Corners
Author: esama
Pairing: Harry/Mycroft
Length: 68000
Rating: T on fanfic.net
Warnings: some suidical ideation
Verse: Sherlock BBC and Harry Potter crossover
Author's summary: Everything started with a stumble - his new life in a new world as well as his surprisingly successful career as a medium.
Reccer's comments:
This is definitely a HP/Sherlock crossover classic, so I was a bit surprised it hasn't been recced here before! All of esama's many fics are clever, well-plotted and thought-provoking--this is no exception. The pacing is perfect. The characterization is beyond brilliant--Harry's natural apathy is really played up in this fic, and frankly I like him better for it. Mycroft is...Mycroft, only sexier and more relatable than you get to see onscreen. Their interactions are the highlight of the story, and while I won't give away Harry's nickname for Mycroft (it nearly made me spit coffee on my laptop screen, I was laughing so hard), let me just say that it is an experience you shouldn't miss. And the world building that goes into this fic is amazing: esama reveals how Harry got to where he is, and why, in slow increments that leave the reader guessing (and gasping) for more. Luckily, it's complete on fanfic.net, so there's no need to wait!

Title: The Circle of Fifths (series master page on AO3)Author: [livejournal.com profile] nikoshinigami
Pairing: John/Mary, John/Sherlock
Length: 4,902 + 46,501 + 50,995 words
Rating: Teen and Up
Warnings: Character death
Verse: BBC Sherlock
Series summary: Stories dealing with the resolution of season two's "The Reichenbach Fall".
  • Part one summary: E-mails between John and Mr. Sigerson. Post "The Reichenbach Fall".
  • Part two summary: Sequel to "Time Signature". John's life is not only in danger but caught in a delicate balance between love, friendship, and his own desires. A supporting character in his own life's story, it may already be too late to affect his life's course.
  • Part three summary: Sequel to "Pantomime". Nothing is ever simple for John Watson when it involves Sherlock Holmes. With the world doing its best to outdo even its only consulting detective, can the things left unsaid ever finally be spoken?
Reccer's comments: One thing I really like about this post-Reichenbach return series is how much of ACD canon it incorporates without being a slave to it. There is the story of John and Mary's relationship, the Sign of Four, Sherlock's disguise upon his return, the Empty House, Moran, and Adair. The author has made the stories their own, though, with twists and plot bombs that had my jaw hanging with each reveal. As per the warning, there is a canon character who dies (just as in the books), but even knowing that, the way it happens is a surprise.

The author has done a masterful job of interweaving case!fic and romance, making each aspect dependent on the other. There are clues scattered throughout the series that make the detailed planning on the part of the author clear and their cleverness with the climaxes even more impressive.

As the rating shows, there is no explicit sex, but that doesn't mean you will go lacking for tingles and dopamine surges. The UST is heady and aching, and although it is not exactly resolved, you aren't left completely without closure by the end of the third part. Still, for those who want more, a fourth part is planned and I'm certainly looking forward to seeing what new surprises are in store.
