Reccer's comments: I fell in love with this at the third paragraph. The writing is sparse, brutal and beautiful. Nypheline gives you exactly what you need and nothing else. Her John Watson is a little harder than I'm used to seeing in fandom and that alone is worth reading. I absolutely believe in this post- Reichenbach John, where Sherlock's fall has burned away some of the softer bits to reveal some steel underneath.
I've seen many interpretations of Sebastian Moran, all of them interesting in their own way, but Nypheline's in particular is capitvating. He's not a triggar happy lunatic, empty vessal or John's total opposite. Instead, he and John are alike in the same way that Moriarty and Sherlock are alike. They're operating at just slighly different frequencies and when they overlap there's this great hot electric buzz.

Except: John’s wearing a shirt that smells like formaldehyde, smelling pickled even before they step in the bar, and a look of sullen guilt. The stranger doesn’t ask. He watches John hunch into the pub and order ten rounds of the worst gin either of them have ever tasted, and they drink it neat. The stranger pulls out a spent bullet casing from his pocket and twirls it on the bar with his fingers. John’s shoulder aches, his leg aches, his heart aches.
