Title: The Reality of Waking
Author:: Chancy_Lurking
Pairing: Sherlock Holmes/John Watson/Mary Watson
Length: 12,459
Rating: Mature
Warnings: drug use (non-consensual), hallucinations, dissociation
Verse:Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: "Sherlock means to stand, but he feels like he’s outside himself, like he exists just slightly above his own body. He looks down and the floor is mud, then cobble stone, then it’s the roof he jumped from, then it’s the carpet in the Watson’s apartment."

(Sherlock gets trapped in a drug-induced fantasy that is scarily close to his real life.)

Reccer's comments: I’m having a hard time describing this lovely and haunting re-imagining of S4, because it’s so exquisitely constructed with its twisty reveals and lyrical prose style, that too much plot summary feels like a blunt instrument.

But in short: Sherlock is abducted and drugged, kept in a dream world for a month - and then John and Mary help him sort out what is real and what is not, and what real-world action he has to take. Sherlock is still stoned, dissociating, and vulnerable; Eurus is still manipulative and terrifying - and yet so many other things are so beautifully altered, finally fitting into place as a story about family, both biological and chosen. For all of her monstrously selfish motives, Eurus is ultimately a figure of pity here in her loneliness, and Sherlock breaks through all that in a more believable, ringing-true way than he did on the show, IMO. The author isn’t too worried about spoilers in tagging it Happy Ending, for which I’m glad. It’s a polyamorous Johnlockary happy ending, with Sherlock feeling content and fulfilled at last in the embrace of his found family, and that does my heart so very good.

Title: The Lying Detective (alternative)
Author: 221b_hound
Pairing: Sherlock Holmes/John Watson, past Sherlock Holmes/John Watson/Mary Morstan
Length: 20K
Rating: Mature
Warnings: None
Verse: BBC
Author's summary: Mary was the bridge between them. Without her, is there still an 'us'? Perhaps, if John and Sherlock can survive the guilt, the grief, the game.

Reccer's comments: This is part of an AU series 3 & 4 that takes the basic plot of the episodes, adds Johnlockary, and changes a few other things, some minor and some more major. I’ve found it surprisingly engaging despite not being a Johnlockary fan and generally disparaging fics that re-hash the aired episodes in much detail. I also admit I haven’t read all of the parts, but you can dive in at any point, really, if you are familiar with the episode in question.

This one is a terrific slog through the depths of grief and despair in the wake of Mary’s death, made more painful and eviscerating by the fact that the Mary in this was genuinely likable and the three of them were involved in a loving and happy polyamoric relationship. (We only see one brief and sketchy flashback scene of the three of them in bed together, which is easily skipped if you are only here for the Johnlock.) At the same time, the Culverton Smith plot is revamped to work more authentically, a far cry from the broadcast “go to hell/save John Watson” scenario that viewers were confronted with.

The characters are all treated with respect and depth, with a marvelous ensemble cast involving several secondary characters in meaty and important roles. Harry Watson in particular is a shining star of an OC with a potty mouth and a heart of tarnished gold.

I really encourage anyone who was unhappy with series 4 – and especially the whiplash treatment of Mary’s character and gutting of John and Sherlock’s friendship – to give this series a try. It’s gutsy and bold, drawing on real emotion rather than flash and showmanship, and truly allowing the characters and their stories to touch hearts.

Title: A Dangerous Love
Author: redbuttonhole (AO3)
Pairings: Sherlock/John/Mary
Length: 10631 words
Rating: PG
Verse: BBC Sherlock
Author's summary: In His Last Vow, seven months between the Watson Family Domestic and Christmas at the Holmes’ pass unseen. Here’ one version of what might have happened during that gap. John and Sherlock and Mary all love each other. And it’s tearing them apart.

Reccer's comments: After Mary shoots Sherlock, John moves back to 221B. Sherlock attempts to bring John and Mary back together, and ends up growing rather close to Mary himself.

I like fics that explore the possibilities of a relationship between Sherlock, Mary and John; I very much like fics in which Sherlock is attracted to Mary independently of his relationship with John, and not just because he’s in love with John and she happens to be part of the package. I like Sherlock’s and Mary’s characterization here; they get each other because they are remarkably similar – which, as John points out, isn’t always a good thing. Contains infidelity, some angst, and three kind of messed up people trying to figure out what they are to one another and how they can possibly fit all together.

Title: A Simple Deduction
Author: riventhorn
Pairing: Sherlock Hound/John Watson/Marie Hudson
Length: 3769 words
Rating: G
Verse: Sherlock Hound (Meitantei Holmes)
Author's summary: Hound, Watson, and Mrs. Hudson might never say it, but actions speak louder than words.

Reccer's comments: Affectionate, domestic, OT3 fluff for the 1984 anime series, Sherlock Hound. The first chapter is mostly pre-canon (although we do get to see Hound going a bit dreamy after meeting Dr. Watson), and the last two are set indeterminately post-canon. The character voices are spot-on, from Hound's gentlemanly reserve to Moriarty's scenery-chewing, and the shenanigans are appropriately over-the-top, and yet the story proper is a series of largely quiet, sometimes humorous moments that document the development of the OT3.

"A Simple Deduction" makes a few references to canon events, but they're not plot-critical, and shouldn't set you back if you don't know them. However, for those who prefer to know all the things, the references are drawn almost exclusively from two episodes: #1 "The Four Signatures" (wherein Hound first meets Dr. Watson), and #6 "The White Cliffs of Dover" (wherein there is far more to Mrs. Hudson than either of her lodgers suppose).

Title: Mrs. Hudson's Guide to Care and Control of Household Pests (When to Call a Professional)

Author: [livejournal.com profile] vulgarweed
Pairing: Mrs Hudson/Sherlock/Irene
Length: about 7,800 words
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: none
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: The ageing housing stock of central London is picturesque but delicate, and often harbours destructive pests who wreak havoc on the fragile structures. If such damage is spotted, building owners and managers are advised to contact a skilled professional who is well-versed in the control of vandalous creatures.

Reccer's comments: How about some lovely, genial porn that’s also quite unexpectedly and insanely steamy to round off this August month?

Mrs Hudson knows exactly who to engage to deal with the pest who’s been shooting her wall. Putting it on the rent is one way of teaching him a lesson but there are other, ultimately more pleasurable and effective methods to teach your wayward tenant a lesson.

This fic is both wonderfully funny and wonderfully hot. One minute you’re howling with laughter and the next…

Well, you know.

Just go and enjoy it!

Pairing: Mary Morstan/John Watson, Mary Morstan/John Watson/Sherlock Holmes
Length: 13,400
Rating: None given R?
Warnings: none
Verse: Ritchie Films

Author's summary: Mary Morstan sees more than she is given credit for, and she has been watching for a long time. This is the story of how she gets John Watson to stop waiting and take what he wants: Sherlock Holmes.

Reccer's comments: I sense a theme in my recs for this month. I didn't love Mary in the films, but I love what fanficcers have done with her. She's just the sort of smart, tough, and funny kind of woman Watson would have fallen for (and Holmes, too!). She is no pliable Victorian lady in this fic as she schemes to get the three of them together. The dialog is great, the voices perfectly in character. It's a definite treat.

Title: Toplock Talent Search
Author: [livejournal.com profile] anarfea
Pairing: Sherlock/John, Sherlock/Irene, Sherlock/Jim/Molly
Length: approx. 25,000 words
Rating: explicit
Warnings: top!Sherlock (the reason the fic exists)
Verse: BBC Sherlock
Author's summary: “It’s frankly alarming,” said the Sherlock in the fishnet top, “watching you simper and fawn and make puppy eyes over John like a … sad, gay baby.”
Sherlock’s mouth fell open. “I am not a sad gay baby!”
“Yes, you are,” said Irene.
“Well, what is he, then?” sputtered Sherlock. “Splaying his legs open so everyone can see his cock through those trousers. Sitting there leering at the rest of us like some sort of superior … Dark fuck prince.”

Currently a WIP. Last updated July 2015. There should be one more chapter according to the author. However, as chapter three to five are pretty much stand alone's you can really go ahead and read!

Reccer's comments: This fic is proof of the human mind’s remarkable talent to turn something vile into something hilarious. Written in response to the vagaries imposed upon last year’s 221B con by a this fic has the show’s characters discuss fanfic, gender politics, sexual roles, ship wars, and fandom, as they search for the perfect incarnation of Toplock.

The author masterfully plays with tropes and head!canons as exploited in the series by Moffat and Gatiss, by fanfic writers (the author included) and readers and shows that the pen, especially when wielded with a humour that manages to cast everyone in a satirical light, truly is the strongest weapon ever invented.

The fic heads off with lots of clever banter flying around the living room. Anthea presides and has a hard time keeping the various characters in their respective incarnations in check. We get to meet DarkFuckPrince!Sherlock, GayBaby!Sherlock, JustTransport!Sherlock, Angry!John (well, he doesn’t get laid, obviously), Saint!John and BAMF!John, Virgin!Sherlock and all these incarnations, traipsing around 221B’s living room together, are totally IC. As are Irene, Mycroft, Anthea, Mrs Hudson, Jim and Molly and even Sebastian Moran. Because no fic featuring Jim is complete without a truly creepy Moran in the background. Fie Moftiss.

Once Anthea has waved her magic wand and decided upon the various pairings we follow those to the rooms allotted them for yet more talk, debate, argument, conference, exchange, review, conversation, consideration, dialogue, consultation, seminar, discourse, deliberation, symposium, colloquy, confabulation not to mention examination, investigation, analysis, scrutiny and dissection that will have you screaming with laughter and chuckling over so much cleverness. Then in each chapter the whole delicious concoction gets topped off with some scorchingly-hot sex, with Sherlock topping of course. Yes, even GayBaby!Virgin!Sherlock gets to do the topping.

What really blew me away in this fic however is the encounter in chapter four, between JustTranpost!Sherlock and a beautifully brave and tender Irene. Even if you don’t read the rest of the fic, read this chapter at least for the wonderful insight into their relationship. You won’t regret it.

Title: Cake and Other Sins
Author: Indybaggins
Pairings: Sherlock Holmes/John Watson, Mycroft Holmes/Sherlock Holmes, Mycroft Holmes/Sherlock Holmes/John Watson
Length: 100.673 words
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: none
Verse: BBC
Author's summary: AU. Sherlock and John meet as competing bakers on The Great British Bake Off. There’s intense baking, lush recipes and enticing food. Mycroft, guilt, past sins in chocolate and gingerbread. And love. That too.

Reccer's comments: I've read the summary and I've read the warnings and neither had prepared me for this fic. There is crack in this fic, yes. But there's also plenty of angst. It's way more intense, disturbing and serious than you'd think upon seeing it's a Great British Bake Off AU.

I freely admit that while I appreciate this threesome and how John somehow balances things out, and I also quite enjoy Johnlock in here, this fic for me is won by holmescest and quite probably the most fascinating description of this relationship in fandom. Almost all fics that describe Holmes' brothers relationship somehow touch the subject of food, diets and fat jokes, but this is the one ties it all up into one perfectly twisted mix.

I feel I have to say that even if these pairings are your cup of tea, this fic might not be, might be too much in the wrong direction. However it just might hit all of the right buttons and you will realize what a gem it is and how quite possibly it's the most perfect, most twisted love story ever written. Plus, there will be cakes.

Title: The Rule of Three

Pairing: SH/JW/MH
Length: ~7,500 words
Rating: PG
Warnings: none
Verse: ACD Books

Author's summary: Beginnings, endings and a most unconventional arrangement.

Reccer's comments: Here's a fic which has been buried in the back pages of Cox&Co. since - hold on - 2005. Many of the author's other fics are on AO3, but for some reason, this one isn't.
Remember, in canon we are never given any indication of how old Martha Hudson is. In this charming story told from her point of view, Killalla has chosen to envision her as a contemporary of Holmes and Watson. It's a sweet and unusual tale of an arrangement that stays completely true to the characters as we know them and true to the times in which they lived.

Mods, I think we need a tag for Pairing:SH/JW/Martha or some such.

Title: Dangerous Girls
Author: zemph147
Pairing: fem!Sherlock Holmes/Mary Morstan/John Watson
Length: 9676 words
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: n/a
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: Sherlock is a girl. John likes Sherlock. Sherlock likes girls. Sherlock likes Mary. They work something out.

Reccer's comments: Series 3 didn't bring the influx of threesome fics one might have hoped for (well, understandably so.) I've never considered the idea of Sherlock and Mary as a pairing if John were to be taken out of the equation – it might be because I can't quite see Sherlock as straight, since it turns out I can definitely see the appeal with a genderbent Sherlock Holmes.

I had never read a fic in which John was attracted to Sherlock while Sherlock was solely attracted to Mary, and it is a fascinating dynamic (probably because I still like the "ops, I'm in love with my best friend's wife" trope, overused as it might be). Regardless of what you think of Mary it's obvious that Sherlock liked her almost right away and really cared about her, so Sherlock's attraction to her doesn't feel far-fetched here – in fact I'd go as far as to say that the fact Sherlock didn't notice something was off about Mary is proof of how much he had come to trust her. In this fic, Mary is intriguing and still John and Sherlock's blind spot – she isn't simply written as a "nice" character but nor is she gratuitously turned into a villain. Also, I've always liked the idea of a female Sherlock and a male John still being best friends (or the other way around, I don't particularly care which) and I think it's interesting to see how one of them being a woman might put a different spin on their relationship.

Much of this fic is explicit scenes, but the characters have depth and the prose is beautiful, and it was a very satisfying read.

Excerpt:

Sherlock knows she is blind when it comes to Mary. She knows it, and she still stumbles along, feeling the curve of Mary's neck and the bumps of her spine like the walls of a labyrinth, hoping there is not a monster waiting in the center. And there shouldn't be, because John is there, holding her hand, checking the moral compass and then confirming their righteous path in the stars. Attraction poisons Sherlock's mind, but John is a doctor. John would never love something toxic.

Pairing: Sherlock/Lestrade/John
Length: 3800 words
Rating: Mature
Warnings: Light BDSM
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: John's good at untying knots. Lestrade finds out where he gets all the practice.

Reccer's comments: This fic makes excellent use of the trope that John gets kidnapped quite often to put Lestrade on the scent of Sherlock and John’s fondness for rope bondage. From there, the reader is taken along with Lestrade on an unexpected introduction to the sexy version of tied-up John Watson. Characterizations here are great: Sherlock is dismissive and quick-witted, Lestrade is matter-of-fact and game for anything, and John is turned on by danger. A very hot and enjoyable romp.

Pairing: Marcus Bell/Ms. Hudson/Alfredo Llamosa
Length: 5,715 words
Rating: Teen
Warnings: None apply
Verse: Elementary
Author's summary: Marcus gets along really well with Holmes' friends.

Reccer's comments:
Some of Elementary’s supporting characters get a chance to shine in this fic. Marcus meets and begins crushing on both Alfredo and Ms. Hudson, and Sherlock is a little appalled.

"I find it disturbing that you are forging relationships with my inner circle for reasons unknown," said Holmes. "You have ulterior motives."

Marcus took a second to parse that out, and then another second to figure out what to say. "Yeah, I guess," he admitted, finally. "My ulterior motive is that your friends are hot, Holmes."

Every character’s voice is spot-on, particularly Marcus’s as the viewpoint character, and the fic overall is just so delightfully fluffy, capturing perfectly the heady feeling of a burgeoning relationship. There are also some lovely moments between Sherlock and Joan, bickering and being domestic, and it’s wonderful to see Joan and Alfredo especially continuing to help Sherlock manage his sobriety.

I don't generally listen to podfics, but susan_voight's reading is very clear and smooth, and it has a sort of sly humor that really suits Marcus's flirting.

All in all, however, you consume this fic, the experience is a delight.

Author's summary: Gratuitous porn, remixed as a favour from another fandom's double penetration prompt.
Reccer's comments: The summary really doesn’t do this piece of filthy deliciousness justice. The premise (Lestrade is fantasizing about Sherlock and John) belies how well-characterized this is; Lestrade’s thought process is both amusing and fascinating, as Calico takes us through the twists and turns of how his fantasies work. Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: Fragment of a vampire AU.
Reccer's comments: This fic is a scintillating little peek into that most marvellous of guilty pleasures, the Vampire AU. What makes it stand out is the quality of Sarah T's writing, which is consistently wonderful whatever her subject matter and this is no exception. It has a sort of clean lyricism to it which I really love. Here, the dynamic between Sherlock and Mycroft as seen through the eyes of John is what I find most compelling - the lovely, quiet intimacy of their actions have such a delicious eroticism to them, and the way a slightly reluctant John is at first shocked and then intrigued and finally utterly seduced by the two of them (because really, who wouldn't be?) is wonderfully done.

Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: Sherlock Holmes finds his way back to the land of the living, if he was ever there to begin with.

Reccer's comments: This is a hiatus/post-Reichenbach/Empty House story that covers the personal side of what Sherlock got up to while he was away, which was basically had a lot of sex with Irene, and what happens when he returns, which is basically have a lot of sex with John, and deal with Moran on the side. It's not straightforward smut, though. Everything Sherlock does is for a reason, and he both finds and reveals depths of himself that no one suspected he had, not even himself.

What I really like about this fic is that the author dares to allow Sherlock to have space in his heart for both Irene and John, and still ends up with a plausible, happy ending which does not involve the three of them shacking up together (the threesome is only one scene). Rather than coming between the two men, Irene is the catalyst that allows John and Sherlock's relationship to move forward. No one is the bad guy (well, except for Moran), and the characterisation of Irene is so cutting and clever and wise that I relished every scene with her.

Reccer's comments:  I was very happy this fic was recently completed so I could rec it before my turn ends this monthSherlock-exploring-sex-as-an-experiment is one of my favorite tropes, and this story does a great job with it.  First off, there’s porn – lots and lots of porn.  Very hot porn, of all sorts.  But that’s not really why this story sticks with me.  Because there’s plot, too.  Mostly focused on John and Sherlock’s character development and how it affects their relationship, but there’s also a clever case fic woven in the later chapters.  And it’s all woven together to form a satisfyingly hot, funny, and touching read.

Author's summary: In which John learns to balance a kinky girlfriend, an asexual boyfriend, a ten-inch cock, his sister, the neighbours, his friends, and his blog. Some are more balanced than others.
Reccer's comments: Baisingstoke's classic work (you can call it a classic when it's got 25k hits on AO3, right?) features a Mary Morstan for the modern age. She's a sassy, funny, confident woman who works in a sex toy shop. You can definitely understand why John would be attracted to her, and the whole series weaves a great tale as these three begin to really fit into each others' lives. There's splendid banter, and effectively hilarious lists and other tidbits as interludes between scenes. As an extra-special bonus, there's lots of fun sex in all its realistic, imperfect, sometimes funny-and-confusing glory.

Title: Marriage á Trois

Pairing: John/Mary/Sherlock

Rating: PG-13

Verse: Ritchie films
Author's summary: In the aftermath of the Blackwood case, Mary determines that if she wants to have a successful marriage, she must find a way to integrate Holmes into her relationship with John. It's a decision that will have a number of unforeseen consequences, as she becomes far closer with the famous detective than she ever could have imagined.

Reccer's comments:  Hands-down, this is my favorite characterization of Mary Watson née Morstan.   Sorrel has written her as a believably strong 19th century female protagonist.  Her determined campaign to win the respect of her husband’s dearest friend is written as such a logical progression that the ending seems inevitable.  The story is not very explicit, but it still sizzles with the energy between the three strong personalities.  Even if you aren’t normally a fan of the Ritchieverse, this story is worth a try just for the chance to see Sherlock through Mary’s eyes.   One caution – if you start this in the evening be prepared to lose sleep – once started it is hard to stop!

Reccer's comments: Oh, I don't know how that happened that this gem hasn't been recced yet? It's not as if the author is unknown, and it has tons of comments and kudos on AO3. Is it possible that people thought that it doesn't need reccing? I would disagree here. There's always a possibility that someone might have missed it, and it's definitely a must, must read. It's angsty at some places, hilarious in others, and flirting with crack on each page, never, though, becoming it. Just the usual madness of 221B Baker Street, being presented in laconic descriptions, snatches of conversations electronic and not, and lots of sexual relations, deviant and not. Being put together by the ridiculously talented author (really, I'd have given much to be able to write as she does, she needs just a paragraph where I would need a page!) it's quite probably one of the very best stories written in this fandom. Oh, and it has a new incarnation of Mary Morstan, up to date my most favorite one. I have a tender spot for the stories where author can make the J/S/MM threesome work, and Basingstoke definitely does.

Basically, these two fics read, to me, like a fork in the road, or two options from a choose-your-own-adventure book. In both, John is in a poly relationship with both Holmes brothers. In Armistice, Mycroft and Sherlock come to an agreement about how their relationship(s) should work. In Modern Warfare, they can't agree on anything. With sexy results!
